Malda Sadar subdivision is a subdivision of the Malda district in the state of West Bengal, India. It consists of Old Maldah municipality, English Bazar municipality and nine community development blocks: English Bazar, Gazole, Habibpur, Kaliachak–I, Kaliachak–II, Kaliachak–III, Manickchak, Old Maldah and Bamangola. The headquarters of the subdivision is in English Bazar.
Apart from Old Maldah municipality and English Bazar municipality, the subdivision contains three census towns and rural areas of 97 gram panchayats under nine community development blocks: English Bazar, Gazole, Habibpur, Kaliachak–I, Kaliachak–II, Kaliachak–III, Manickchak, Old Maldah and Bamangola. The three census towns are: Kachu Pukur, Kendua and Aiho.
The Malda Sadar Sub-Division consists of mainly of low - lying plains, sloping towards the south with undulating areas on the northeast.
Barind: -The River Mahananda divides the Sadar Sub-Division into two regions-the Eastern region, consisting mainly of old alluvial and relatively unfertile soil is commonly known as "Barind".
Tal: - The Western region is further subdivided by the river Kalindri into two areas, the northern area is known as "Tal”.
Diara: - The Southern of the river Kalindri and the Eastern part of the Ganga River, area consists of very fertile land and is thickly populated, being commonly known as “Diara " - it is low lying and vulnerable to inundation during rainy season.
The River Ganges flow along the South-Western boundary of this Sub-Division. Other important rivers are Fulahar, Kalindri, Mahananda, Tangoan ,Punarbhaba, Pagla and Bhagirathi. Old river track of riverBehula is also seen in Barind area.
There are big River islands (Char) within this Sub-Division. “Bhutni” river island consists of 3 Gram Panchayats. Apart from Bhutni, there are Dowani. Gadai andNarayanpur chars in Manikchak Blocks. In Kaliachak-II block, there is one famous river island, namely, Khatiakhana char. Besides above, there are large no. of islands within river Ganges. But those are mainly de-populated, have fertile land for Kalai cultivation and recorded as “Shikhosti” in land records.
